Bed Jacket Knitting Pattern

Bed jackets are practical for those who are ill but they are also wonderful for cold nights reading in bed. This bed jacket has a short body and long armholes to accommodate pajamas and night gowns. This pattern would also work well as a cropped cardigan or bolero. For a tighter fitting garment, some slight alterations need to be made. Knit it in a nice silk yarn and this pattern transforms itself. Add funky buttons and buttonholes or tie a ribbon at the top to close if desired. Size:

Be careful when decreasing and increasing that you follow the pattern stitch and don’t increase or decrease too many sts. Use stitch markers between pattern repeats to help you keep to pattern. The instructions include two selvedge sts that are not included in the pattern st. Knit the first and last st of each row or use any of your favorite selvedge sts. Back
With straight needles, CO 86 sts.
K 8 rows.
Begin pattern and work for 10″ or desired length.
BO 4 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows.
Keeping to pat, dec 1 st at each end every other row 3 times (72 sts).
Work until armhole is 10″ or until desired length.
BO 8 sts at the beg of the next 4 rows.
Place rem sts on holder. Front (Make 2)
With straight needles, CO 44 sts.
K 8 rows.
Begin pattern and work for 10″ or until desired length.
At armhole, BO 4 sts.
Keeping to pattern, at armhole dec 1 st every other row 3 times (37 sts)
Work until armhole is 7.5″ or until desired length.
At neck edge, BO 10 sts (27 sts)
At neck edge, BO 2 sts every other row 5 times (17 sts)
Work until armhole is 10″ or until desired length.
Beg at sleeve edge, BO 8 sts, work back, BO 8 sts. Sleeves
With straight needles, CO 37 sts.
K 8 rows.
Begin pattern.
Keeping to pattern, inc 1 st every 10th row 7 times – 51 sts.
Work 17.5″ or to desired length.
BO 4 sts beg next two rows – 43 sts.
Keeping to pattern, dec 1 st at each end every 4th row 13 times – 17 sts.
BO rem sts. Collar And Bands
Seam shoulders.
With circular needles, pick up stitches for band from the left edge of the garter stitch bottom border to neckline. Knit stitches from holder. Pick up stitches from neckline to bottom border for remainder of the band. Please see Picking Up Stitches For Necklines And Armholes for more information.
K 4 rows.
BO all sts. Finishing
Sew in sleeves. Seam sleeve and side seams. Weave in ends on WS.
